The Churchyard Survey
A survey of St George's Churchyard, Ivychurch was carried out in June 2014 to order to identify how many of the gravestones listed in Leland L. Duncan’s early 20th century survey survived and to list those gravestones which had been erected since his survey.
A transcription of Duncan’s original survey (plus many others he made for Kent) can be found at the Kent Archaeological Society website.
The revised listing to be found on this page begins with a copy of the text of Leland’s survey taken from the KAS website, but with updates. The numbers used are those given by LLD. The updates indicate where a stone has fallen, become damaged or where it is now illegible. There were also a few mistakes and omissions in Leland’s survey which have been annotated in red. Amendments or additions to LLD’s text are in red. Square brackets indicate notes I have added. As time permits I am adding in any further details from the burial register (usually an address), as well as the wording that often precedes the main inscription on a stone e.g. ‘In loving memory’ etc. Gravestones erected since LLD’s survey follow on after it, and are recorded by means of letters: A,B,C etc. and then AB, AA,AB, AC when the end of the alphabet was reached. All gravestone numbers or letters have been plotted on the accompanying graveyard plan to help locate them.Where the stone has a distinguishing feature, such as railings, this is indicated in order to help identify it in the field. Please note that the plan is accurate to the best of our ability, but may not be perfect!
The surveyors were Celia Heritage, Jonathan Risby, Kathryn Robinson and Mark Robinson.
Photographs of Gravestones
Numbers following an entry in the listing refer to photographs of those stones that post-date LLD’s survey. These were taken in 2014. Photographs for all stones are available, should you wish a copy. The majority of the images for the earlier stones were taken in 2010. If you would like a photograph of a particular grave emailed to you please contact me. Please note I do not send images by post. Although there is no charge for photographs a donation to church funds would be very much appreciated. St George's is very large and costs a lot of money to keep in reasonable repair. If you care to make such a donation please send a cheque made out to Ivychurch St George PCC and send to Celia Heritage c/o Church Slip, Ivychurch, Romney Marsh, Kent TN29 0AL.

Many of the gravestones in the churchyard are now very hard to read thanks to the weathering of time and pollution. Therefore I am seeking old photographs of any of the gravestones in Ivychurch church yard to upload to the website so that they can be seen as they once were. Please email me if you have any you are happy to share. The date is not important as long as they show the stone/s in a legible state.
Many thanks to Frank Palmer who has kindly shared the photographs below below relating to the Palmer family stones.

The Palmer Family
Top left: The gravestones of Henry Palmer and his wife Mary shown some time in the 1970s when they were still in good condition. Mary's stone is now recumbent and disintegrating badly. The gentleman with the stones is their grandson Frank Palmer.
Above middle: The stone for Henry and Mary's son Stephen Palmer, now all but illegible. The couple are his son Frank and Frank's wife Emily Leonora. Right: Close up of the stone for Mary Palmer which listed many of her children Bottom left: Stone for two sons of Henry and Mary; namely James who died January 1831 aged 7 weeks and Daniel who died January 1832 aged 1 month This stone still stands and is recognisable by the chunk out of the left hand side. It is now illegible. Many thanks to the modern-day Frank Palmer for sending these photographs. |
